An Elite Linebacking Corps
Recently, a take of mine blew up on Twitter, with mostly negative feedback. That take was that America’s Team has the best group of off-ball linebackers in the sport. This was more of a projection than a statement of fact, but there is plenty of justification for the take. Sean Lee is an elite linebacker and the leader of this defense. When healthy, Bobby Wagner and Luke Kuechly are the only two off-ball linebackers I would take over him. His impact on the team, in general, could be greater than arguably anyone else on the defensive side of the ball.
Going back to Jaylon Smith, this could be his break out campaign. Now his second full season, he is fully healthy and ready to contribute with an increasing amount of opportunities. Taking on more of a role in the pass rush will help his production and show off his entire skillset. Moreover, the last linebacker that makes this group elite is rookie Leighton Vander Esch. The first round pick out of Boise State landed in the perfect spot for him. He’ll take over as the main middle linebacker, where his coverage skills and athleticism will be flaunted and put on display. A first-round rookie and a highly-touted second rounder on the same corps makes their ceiling unbelievably high.
Why This Helps Them Compete
In a 4-3 scheme, the base defense Dallas runs, the linebackers’ jobs are to cover and assist in the run game. With three quality linebackers off the line of scrimmage, the Cowboys’ run defense should be in the upper-echelon of the entire league. All of these linebackers have impressive athletic profiles as well, so coverage should not be an issue. Shutting down the tight ends in the NFC East will be a priority, but struggles may not occur. This linebacking corps is what makes the defense as good as it is.
