Cowboys Becoming Potential Landing Spot For Veteran Tight End

Zach Ertz, Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are in need of a tight end, and Cody Benjamin and Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports see a potential fit for them: Zach Ertz.

Ertz was released by the Arizona Cardinals at the end of November and has apparently had conversations with six teams in the playoff hunt.

It seems relatively safe to assume that the Cowboys were one of those teams, as they have been in need of production at the position all season long.

Dallas is currently one of the hottest teams in the NFL and is coming off of a blowout win over Ertz’s former Philadelphia Eagles club. Quarterback Dak Prescott has emerged as the favorite to win the MVP award thanks to a torrid stretch the last couple of months, and adding a weapon like Ertz into his arsenal would make him even more dangerous the rest of the way.

Ertz is looking to sign with a contender, so the Cowboys would absolutely represent a perfect fit. In seven games with the Cardinals this year, Ertz logged 27 catches for 187 yards and a touchdown.

The 33-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Stanford, was originally selected by the Eagles in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Ertz spent the first eight-and-a-half years of his career in Philadelphia, earning three straight trips to the Pro Bowl between 2017 and 2019. His best campaign came in 2018, when he hauled in 116 receptions for 1,163 yards and eight scores. The veteran also helped Philly win a Super Bowl title the season prior.

The Eagles ultimately traded Ertz to Arizona midway through 2021, and since then, his production has tailed off.

Still, even if Ertz is not exactly the same prolific pass-catcher he was during his Eagles days, he could still definitely help the Cowboys for the remainder of the season and the playoffs.

Dallas is 10-3 and will take on the Miami Dolphins next weekend.
