The Dallas Cowboys boast a very impressive defense, but they still are not great at stopping the run. That was very evident in their Wild Card Round loss to the Green Bay Packers.
You have to think that addressing the run defense will be one of the biggest priorities for the Cowboys this offseason, and Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox envisions a prime target for the club to do just that: Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White.
White is slated to hit free agency this March and will be one of the top linebackers available.
The 25-year-old is actually coming off of a disappointing 2023 campaign in which he played 14 games and registered a career-low 83 tackles to go along with 2.5 sacks, a couple of interceptions and six passes defended.
However, anyone who has watched White play in the past know he is a versatile, tackling machine.
White, who played his collegiate football at LSU, was selected by the Buccaneers with the fifth overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.
By his second season, he had established himself as one of the league’s premier linebackers, racking up 140 tackles, nine sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Somehow, he missed the Pro Bowl, but the following year, White earned a Pro Bowl nod after registering 128 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
The Springhill, La. native then posted similar numbers in 2022, finishing with 124 tackles, 5.5 sacks, a pair of forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
Naturally, he seems like a great fit for Dallas, but the problem for the Cowboys is that they don’t exactly have a great salary cap situation.
Dallas is $11 million over the cap heading into the offseason, so the club will need to get creative and clear some money before it can be a serious player on the free-agent market.
But if the Cowboys are able to get their financial status straightened out, White would certainly be a great option to pursue in the spring.
