On Sunday, Oct. 8, football fans will get to see a potential preview of the NFC Championship Game when Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys visit the San Francisco 49ers for a “Sunday Night Football” contest.

Right now, the 49ers look like the best team in the NFL, and just a couple of weeks ago, the Cowboys had a legitimate argument as arguably the best team as well. But since then, they have lost star cornerback Trevon Diggs for the season due to a torn ACL and lost to the Arizona Cardinals, who have one of the league’s worst rosters, 28-16.

How far the Cowboys go this season will ultimately fall on how well quarterback Dak Prescott plays. The last time he played the 49ers, which was in last season’s divisional playoff round, he did poorly, completing 23 of 37 pass attempts and throwing two interceptions.

When a reporter asked him if he still thinks about that 19-12 loss, he became a bit agitated.

When he was asked a follow-up question about that playoff loss, he did admit that he thinks about it. “Every day,” Prescott answered. “Every day. Every day. Every day.”

The 30-year-old signal-caller played fairly well in Sunday’s 38-3 win over the New England Patriots, completing 28 of 34 passes. But what he does in October doesn’t matter that much — it’s what he does in January, and the Cowboys hope, February that will prove his true worth and greatness.

Dallas is ranked first in points allowed and second in total yards allowed. But if there is a crack in its armor, it may be its run defense — it is just 16th in rushing yards allowed so far this season.

Unfortunately for the team, on Sunday it will be facing Christian McCaffrey, who is on an absolute tear right now and may be the best running back in the NFL. That will be something Prescott won’t be able to do much about.
