Dallas Cowboys Expected To Have Interest In Interesting Free Agent

Michael Thomas, Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys were very quiet in free agency this offseason, with linebacker Eric Kendricks and running back Ezekiel Elliott representing their only notable signings.

The Cowboys have drawn harsh criticism for their laissez-faire approach to the offseason, but in their defense, significant financial constraints have made it difficult for the club to do much of anything.

Now, training camp is just around the corner, and Dallas’ roster is mostly set.

However, there are still some available free agents the Cowboys could consider, and Garrett Podell of CBS Sports is suggesting that the team should pursue wide receiver Michael Thomas.

There was a time when Thomas would not have lasted one day on the open market. Obviously, those days have come and gone.

That being said, Thomas could still represent a viable option for a Dallas squad that is in serious of need of receiving depth behind CeeDee Lamb.

The Cowboys brought in Brandin Cooks last offseason, but he was a disappointment in 2023. They released Michael Gallup earlier this offseason.

So, realistically speaking, Dallas has virtually no proven talent behind Cooks at the position (and again, Cooks isn’t even all that good anymore).

Thomas is coming off of a 2023 campaign with the New Orleans Saints in which he played 10 games and caught 39 passes for 448 yards and a touchdown. It actually represented the veteran’s most productive season since 2019.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by the Saints in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Early on, Thomas was on track to post Hall-of-Fame numbers. He logged over 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons, with his best year coming in 2019 when he led the league in both receptions (149) and receiving yards (1,725) to go along with nine scores.

Thomas made three straight trips to the Pro Bowl Between 2017 and 2019 and paced the NFL in catches twice during that span. He also earned back-to-back First-Team All-Pro selections in 2018 and 2019.

Unfortunately, in 2020, Thomas suffered an ankle injury that knocked him out after seven games. He missed all of 2021 and then appeared in just three contests in 2022 as a result.

This past season, he missed seven games due to knee issues.

As you can see, Thomas has had a whole lot of difficulty staying on the field, but he actually did register decent numbers on a per-game basis in 2023.

If Thomas is able to stay healthy, he could be a steal of a signing for the Cowboys as summer approaches.
