There had been widespread speculation about the possibility of Bill Belichick taking the helm of the Dallas Cowboys if they experienced an early exit from the playoffs. Many thought Jerry Jones would love that opportunity to add a legendary head coach.
However, in the aftermath of a humbling defeat to the Green Bay Packers, the Cowboys made the decision to retain Mike McCarthy as their head coach.
Owner Jerry Jones firmly believes in McCarthy’s capabilities, even though the coach has only one year remaining on his contract.
Despite his strong rapport with McCarthy, Jones recently revealed to Jori Epstein of Yahoo that he would be open to collaborating with Bill Belichick if the opportunity arose.
“I know him personally and I like him. There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None. None.”
This prospect could become a reality if the Cowboys encounter challenges in the upcoming season and Belichick remains available.
Of course, Jerry Jones is hoping for a successful season, as he has just extended McCarthy’s contract and has aspirations of securing a Super Bowl victory. It’s been over 25 years since the Cowboys last claimed the coveted title.
Needless to say, this does not instill confidence in McCarthy or the Dallas Cowboys’ coaching staff. Jerry Jones may have kept the staff intact, but it’s clear that he’s thought about Bill Belichick. A change could be in order if the Cowboys don’t make a deep playoff run next season.
