According to Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, the team is fully committed to extending Dak Prescott‘s contract this offseason.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Jones emphasized that the Cowboys haven’t entertained the idea of a future without Prescott.
“Our whole thing with Dak is him being a Cowboy. That’s all that’s on our mind.”
Prescott’s performance in the previous season solidified his position as the franchise quarterback for the Cowboys.
Finishing second in the MVP race behind Lamar Jackson, Prescott showcased remarkable progress, achieving career highs in completion percentage (69.5%) and quarterback rating (105.9). He also amassed impressive statistics, including 4,516 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions.
Although Prescott is technically under contract until 2026, the last two years of his deal void after the 2024 season. Despite currently ranking tenth among quarterbacks in total cash with $34 million, a restructured contract has elevated his cap hit to the second-highest in the league, trailing only Deshaun Watson.
Given this financial scenario, there is increased pressure on the Cowboys to finalize a new deal with Prescott this offseason. Additionally, with key players like CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons nearing the end of their contracts, securing Prescott’s extension becomes even more crucial.
Jones expressed his desire to continue progressing towards a new agreement with Dak Prescott, although he clarified that updates on negotiations won’t be shared publicly, as reported by Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News.
