Dalton Schultz A Potential Free Agency Target For The Packers?

Dalton Schultz, Packers
NFL Analysis Network

Dallas Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz had a bit of an underwhelming 2022 season. He dealt with a PCL injury early in the season that hampered his effectiveness on the field, which resulted in a regression of his statistics.

Having a down year while playing on the franchise tag certainly isn’t ideal. Dalton Schultz ended the regular season with 57 receptions for 577 yards and five touchdowns, a step down from the 78-808-8 season he had in 2021 that led to the Cowboys placing the tag on him.

But, Dalton Schultz reminded everyone just how good he can be during the team’s victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Super Wild Card Weekend. He paced the team with seven receptions for 95 yards and two touchdowns, constantly working open for chunk yards while working the middle of the field.

Set to hit free agency again, Dalton Schultz should garner plenty of attention as the best tight end and arguably the best pass catcher available this offseason on the market. The Cowboys will assuredly do their best to bring back one of Dak Prescott’s favorite targets, but they will face competition.

One team that could get into the running is the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay reportedly looked into making an upgrade at the tight end spot during the season when attempting to trade for Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders. With Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis set to hit free agency, tight end is a position of need for the Packers.

Dalton Schultz would be a great addition to the roster. Green Bay’s passing offense was unable to recover from the losses of Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling but adding a player of Schultz’s caliber would be a step in helping replace what was lost.

Not only is Dalton Schultz a great pass-catching tight end, but he also gets the job done as a run blocker as well. Being able to keep him on the field will help the Packers disguise plays and packages since they won’t have to change personnel based on the play type.

Having a player that can create plays over the middle of the field while Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs work on the outside is exactly what Green Bay needs. Dalton Schultz would be a great fit whether it is Aaron Rodgers or Jordan Love under center for the team in 2023.
