The Denver Broncos solved their biggest problem earlier this offseason, acquiring quarterback Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks in a blockbuster deal. Wilson will fill the void at quarterback, which has been an issue since Peyton Manning retired and before that since John Elway was leading the team.
With Wilson in the fold, the Broncos have a chance to be contenders in a loaded AFC West. The team was around .500 all 2021 despite underwhelming play under center from Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock. Wilson is a sizable upgrade on those two players and will bolster an offense loaded with weapons.
There are still a few holes to plug in Denver, namely in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Adding some depth and experience to the secondary would also make some sense as the team puts the finishing touches on a roster ready to take that next step this season.
Knowing they are all-in to win now after acquiring Wilson, why not add another superstar to the mix on the other side of the ball? Over at The Athletic, a prescription-based website, they predicted that safety Tyrann Mathieu would land in The Mile High City.
The Broncos already have an All-Pro safety in the mix in Justin Simmons, who is in the second year of a four-year, $61 million deal. But, given his versatility to fill numerous roles, finding a fit for Mathieu next to him shouldn’t be too difficult.
Adding the playmaker to Simmons and rising star Patrick Surtain II would give Denver one of the most talented secondary trios in the NFL. With their division rivals all sporting potentially elite offenses, especially through the air, bolstering the secondary would be a smart move.
Landing Mathieu would also directly impact one of those rivals in the Kansas City Chiefs. While Kansas City has seemingly accepted the fact that Mathieu will not be back, it would be a tough pill to swallow to see him join a Broncos team on the rise and have to face him twice a season.
Fitting Mathieu on the roster salary-wise could be a challenge, but it is a worthwhile one to try and figure out. He is supremely talented and would certainly upgrade a Broncos defense that will face stiff tests throughout the season.
