Denver Broncos Set To Release All-Pro Justin Simmons

The Denver Broncos came into the 2024 NFL offseason with one of the worst salary cap situations in the league. Things only got worse when they decided to release quarterback Russell Wilson, which led to a record amount of dead money being placed on the cap.

That move was the icing on the cake, leading to Denver having to restructure plenty of contracts and release players to become cap-compliant. In their biggest on the path to achieving that, the Broncos have decided to release All-Pro safety Justin Simmons.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, this move is being made strictly to clear some much-needed salary cap space. Simmons was set to count $18.25 million against the cap but instead will now become a free agent and one of the better players available.

Simmons signed a four-year, $61 million contract with the Broncos in 2021 that made him one of the highest-paid players at the position in the NFL. Three years later and he was still near the top, as only five safeties had a higher yearly annual average than him.

It was a contract Simmons certainly deserved given the level of play he provided on the field. He has made an All-Pro Second Team or Pro Bowl in five straight seasons as one of the more steady-performing safeties in the NFL.

In 2022, despite playing in only 12 games, Simmons led the NFL with six interceptions. He has recorded multiple interceptions in all eight seasons of his career, entering the league as a third-round pick of the Broncos out of Boston College in 2016.

A playmaker who is also a sure tackler, Simmons is going to make a new team very happy. He joins a pretty deep free agent safety class that also includes Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Xavier McKinney, Antoine Winfield Jr., Quandre Diggs, Jamal Adams and others.
