Denver Broncos Star DB Offers Blunt Response To Contract Question

Patrick Surtain II, Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II has established himself as one of the best defensive players in football, but his future with the Broncos is uncertain.

Surtain has two years remaining on his deal after Denver exercised his fifth-year option for 2025, so it’s not like the Broncos have to panic right now. However, it would be nice of the club would be able to come to some sort of agreement with him before the 2024 campaign begins.

The 24-year-old was asked about his contract situation this week, but he didn’t have much to add.

“That time will come,” Surtain said, via Ryan McFadden of The Denver Post. “I’m focused on being the best player I can be.”

Should the Broncos Pay Patrick Surtain II?

The Broncos are clearly in rebuilding mode after releasing Russell Wilson and then selecting quarterback Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick of the NFL Draft.

So, is there room for Surtain on the roster moving forward?

Cornerbacks are expensive, especially those of Surtain’s ilk. He has made the Pro Bowl each of the last two years, and in 2022, he was named a First-Team All-Pro.

This past season, Surtain played in every game and registered 69 tackles, an interception and 12 passes defended.

That’s the thing, too: Surtain is very durable, having only missed one game in three seasons.

Taking all of those things into consideration, there is no reason why Denver shouldn’t attempt to lock him up for the foreseeable future, and extending Surtain and spreading out his cap hit may actually prove financially beneficial for the Broncos in the long run.

The problem is that Denver only has about $7.5 million in cap room as it is, so the Broncos need to be very careful about how they spend their resources. Especially after the disastrous Wilson contract.

But Surtain is so good that Denver should absolutely find a way to try and ensure he sticks around for many years to come.

The Plantation, Fl. native, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Broncos with the ninth overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

He has certainly lived up to expectations and then some thus far.

We’ll see if the Broncos reward Patrick Surtain II with a new deal before the 2024 season begins.
