The Denver Broncos‘ offense needs help, and while figuring out their situation at quarterback will be their top priority this offseason, they also require weapons for whoever will be playing under center.
Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus is eyeing who he thinks would be a perfect target for the Broncos: New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.
Thomas is very familiar with Denver head coach Sean Payton, as Payton coached Thomas in the wide out’s first six seasons with the Saints.
There was a time when Thomas was one of the league’s best receivers, but things have changed.
An ankle injury that Thomas suffered in 2020 has almost brought his career to a grinding halt, as he has failed to eclipse even 500 yards receiving since 2019.
This past season, the 30-year-old played in 10 games and caught 39 passes for 448 yards and a touchdown.
Perhaps reuniting with Payton would go a long way in helping Thomas rediscover his old form?
Of course, there is a chance that Thomas simply does not have much left. He has appeared in a grand total of 20 contests the last four years, and he turns 31 in less than a month.
But maybe Payton can find a distinctive role for him in the Mile High City.
Thomas, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by New Orleans in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He posted over 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons, including the 2019 campaign in which he led the league in both receptions (149) and receiving yards (1,725).
Thomas made three straight Pro Bowl appearances between 2017 and 2019 and also earned back-to-back First-Team All-Pro selections in 2018 and 2019.
That superstar pass-catcher probably isn’t coming back, but there is a chance that Thomas could be more productive in a different system. Like Payton’s.
