Derek Carr Mentioned As Possible Trade Target For The Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be a very intriguing team to watch this offseason. With Ben Roethlisberger expected to retire, they will need to find a new franchise quarterback. Some speculation has begun that the Steelers could take a look at trading for Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr in the offseason.

Granted, all of that speculation hinges on whether or not the Raiders are actually open to moving Carr. After overcoming a lot of adversity to make the playoffs this season, Las Vegas may opt to keep Carr for at least one more year. However, if the right offer came around, the Raiders may have to serious consider pulling the trigger on a trade.

CBS Sports took a look at some potential trade destinations for Carr this offseason. The Steelers came in strong at the No. 4 spot on the list of where Carr could begin the 2022 season.

Back in Pittsburgh, the Steelers begin a search for his successor. Mason Rudolph cannot be the final answer unless you root for the Ravens, Bengals or Browns. Mike Tomlin doesn’t seem like the guy to start over with a rookie, either, although making a move in the draft for hometown hero Kenny Pickett would thrill Yinzer types. Carr is an obvious upgrade over Mason or Dwayne Haskins and would give the Steelers direction instead of a one-year patch.

Carr would absolutely be a great addition for the Steelers. They already have a team in place to compete and made the playoffs this season. Being able to acquire a veteran and proven quarterback like Carr would keep them in contention.

During the 2021 season with the Raiders, Carr ended up completing 68.4 percent of his pass attempts for 4,804 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He also picked up 108 yards on the ground. Those numbers aren’t amazing, but they aren’t shabby either.

Pittsburgh would not be trading for Carr thinking that he would single-handedly power them to a Super Bowl. All they would need from him would be consistent production and leadership. Those are both things that Carr can provide.

Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding the Steelers this offseason. They have quite a few decisions to make and a new quarterback to find. Derek Carr may not end up being a target, but he would make a lot of sense.
