Derrick Henry Suggested As Possible Target For Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have made a number of splashes already this offseason. Dallas has recorded back-to-back double-digit win seasons since their dynasty Super Bowl-winning years and is looking to finally get back over the hump after losing seven straight divisional round games.

They upgraded both sides of the ball with two trades, acquiring wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans and cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts. Both players shore up areas of need that the Cowboys had coming into the season, but their work isn’t done.

The running back position could use some attention in the coming weeks. The team decided to move on from Ezekiel Elliott this offseason. While there is a chance he returns down the road, the team will likely exhaust all other options first.

Tony Pollard will be back for the 2023 season after having the franchise tag placed on him. But, his status for Week 1, after suffering a broken left leg and high ankle sprain in the playoffs, is up in the air.

Using one of their selections in the 2023 NFL Draft to add some running back depth would make sense. But, it would be hard to imagine Mike McCarthy turning the backfield over to a rookie at the start of the season.

With that in mind, the Cowboys are likely going to add another veteran at some point. Ronald Jones was signed earlier this offseason, but the team shouldn’t stop there. One player to keep an eye on according to Bill Barnwell of ESPN is Derrick Henry.

There is a chance that the Tennessee Titans embark on a full rebuild this offseason, which would include moving on from Henry. While the Cowboys are unlikely to make a trade for him, if the Titans opt to release him later in the offseason, Dallas makes a lot of sense as a landing spot.

Pairing Henry and Pollard together in the backfield would give the Cowboys arguably the best running back duo in the NFL. Henry is one of the most dominant players in the NFL on early downs but leaves something to be desired in the passing game. Pollard, a converted wide receiver, is an excellent third-down and receiving back that can also handle early down work.

Having two capable players in the backfield will help keep each of them fresh for what the Cowboys hope is a long season. If someone such as Henry were added to the backfield, Dallas could really take their time easing Pollard back into the mix to ensure he is 100 percent healthy before returning to the field.
