Detroit Lions: 3 Players to Watch in Preseason Week 2 vs. Giants

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Matt Cassel, Quarterback

Matthew Stafford is the unquestioned starting quarterback of the Detroit Lions but it’s always important to have a backup plan in case anything should happen. Against the Raiders, the Lions elected to sit their franchise quarterback and give the two backups a chance to secure the number two spot on the depth chart.

During the offseason, Matt Cassel signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Lions to back up Matthew Stafford. His time spent with head coach Matt Patricia during their time with the New England Patriots has certainly given him an early leg up over Jake Rudock. However, Cassel will have to perform throughout the remainder of preseason if he wants to secure that primary backup role.

His first game with the Detroit Lions left a lot to be desired. On the night he finished with 10 completions on 18 attempts for only 81 yards. Along with a fumble, Cassel was also sacked three times. While it was only the first preseason game the Lions will certainly be looking for more as they get closer to the regular season.
