Dolphins: Why Jordan Howard could be a massive free agency steal for Miami

The Miami Dolphins may be closer to success than many people think. While they may not be Super Bowl contenders at this point, the Dolphins have good players. There is a lot of hope for Miami’s future.

Many of the issues that plagued them last season have been addressed. Over the offseason, the Dolphins made some very smart signings to kickstart their rebuild, with Jordan Howard certainly being one of the highlights.

Last season, the Dolphins’ most glaring issue was the inability to run the football. To put that into perspective, their leading rusher last season was veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. While that is partially due to many injuries at running back, Fitzpatrick only rushed for 243 yards.

It didn’t help the Dolphins traded Kenyan Drake halfway through the season. However, it wasn’t until Drake played for the Arizona Cardinals before he hit his stride as a player. On 123 rush attempts with his new team, he racked up 643 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, increasing his average for yards per carry from 3.7 with Miami up to 5.2.

The poor offensive line play was a major reason why the Dolphins wer so ineffective running the ball. Jesse Davis, starting right tackle, addressed their struggles when speaking to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinal.

We’re leading a lot of those [negative] numbers, from sacks to the run game, and that’s not a good thing. Nobody wants to tarnish this organization and make our position coaches look bad. We have pride, and we don’t like those numbers and definitely want to turn it around.

While the Dolphins offensive line struggled last season, they used one of their three first-round picks on left tackle Austin Jackson. Miami also signed Ereck Flowers, who after struggling at tackle to begin his career, has shown improvement playing at guard.

Another reason the Dolphins running game is going to improve is the signing of veteran back Jordan Howard. While he hasn’t been flashy throughout his career, Howard is a quality back. Miami may have gotten a major steal signing Howard over the offseason.
