The New York Giants signed quarterback Drew Lock to a one-year deal in free agency this week, and everyone assumed that he would be the team’s primary backup heading into 2024.

But apparently, Lock will have the opportunity to compete with Daniel Jones for the starting job.

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider revealed that tidbit of information during an appearance on Seattle Sports Radio 710 AM, saying that the reason why Lock bolted Seattle for New York was because of the chance to become QB1.

“They basically sold him on the opportunity to compete to be the starter,” Schneider said. “And he felt like it was the right opportunity. He looked at Baker Mayfield’s opportunity last year and felt that this could be something similar.”

Lock started two games for the Seahawks in place of an injured Geno Smith this past season and went 1-1 in those starts. He made four appearances on the year overall, throwing for 543 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 63.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 81.2.

Here’s the thing, though: the Giants own the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft next month and are widely expected to select a quarterback.

Imagine the mess that would create in New York’s quarterback room?

It seems hard to fathom the Giants taking a signal-caller and then starting Lock over Jones with Jones slated to make $35.5 million in base salary next season.

New York signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million deal last March, but only the first two years of the contract are guaranteed. So, Jones’ salary for 2024 is guaranteed.

Would the Giants really let him sit on the bench in favor of Lock?

It doesn’t seem all that likely.

We’ll see what happens, but evidently, Drew Lock is under the impression that he will have the chance to open next season as Big Blue’s starting quarterback.
