What Happened to the Eagles’ Running Game?
What was once the backbone of their offense, is now hurting them. The main problem may be the departure of former lead back, Blount. With Blount gone, the lead position has fallen to Jay Ajayi who helped sparked the run to the Super Bowl after his trade from the Miami Dolphins last season.
This season, through the first two games, the Eagles have rushed for 204 yards on 51 attempts with a 4.0 yards-per-carry average. While that equals out to 25 carries per game and 100 yards, that’s good for a single back.
So what’s the issue?
For one, the Eagles have resorted back to their days under Andy Reid. They have the speed and shifty runners but no true power back. This is where Blount is missed the most.
In order for the Eagles to get back to winning, they must provide Wentz with a security blanket of sorts. Against the Buccaneers, the Eagles were without running back Darren Sproles, and then Ajayi went down and the ground game came to a halt. The biggest question facing the team now is can they continue at this pace, or will they have to find a free agent or make a trade for a bruising back to wear defenses down?
