Philadelphia Eagles: 3 Possible Trades to Make Before Week 1

Running back Jay Ajayi for a future pick

The third and final player the Eagles could deal before the start of their 2018 campaign is running back Jay Ajayi. There are a multitude of reasons why trading Ajayi is an option. First, the Eagles currently have a trio of running backs who are all capable of producing.

Both Darren Sproles and Corey Clement can make plays in the run and pass game. Now both Sproles and Clement aren’t the power back Ajayi is, but that isn’t an issue. Once quarterback Carson Wentz is back starting full-time after being cleared from his 2017 ACL injury, the Eagles offense won’t have to rely on the run game as much. Wentz, as he matures each year, can take over the offense, making the run game an added bonus, if there.

Secondly, the reason Ajayi was traded to the Eagles in the first place is because the Miami Dolphins were worried about his injuries. More specifically, Ajayi’s knee issues just don’t disappear. Heading into the season with Ajayi as the only running back who will primarily be carrying the ball is a problem. The more touches Ajayi gets the more wear and tear will occur on those knees of his.

If running the ball or running in the red zone becomes a problem, the Eagles could always look to free agency for a bigger running back to play in certain situations.

Then again, Sproles is a veteran who knows how to score touchdowns. And Clement is short but sturdy at 220 pounds.

In all reality, the Eagles can stand pat how they are and have confidence that they can repeat as champions in 2018. But these trades will help Philadelphia build towards creating a dynasty and avoid signing large contracts that take up the team’s salary. Just look at their neighboring basketball team, the Philadelphia 76ers, and how stockpiling draft picks has panned out for them.
