Eagles A Suggested Landing Spot For Veteran Safety

Heading into training camp, there aren’t any glaring needs on the roster of the Philadelphia Eagles. General manager Howie Roseman did an excellent job of restocking the roster this offseason despite numerous key contributors departing in free agency.

There are going to be some new faces in a few key areas in the lineup, but the Eagles are confident that those players can get the job done. A lot of them are draft picks with immense upside from recent years that are being elevated into bigger roles.

While confident in their abilities, some positions will be relying on some inexperienced players. So, it would not be surprising to see the Eagles dip back into free agency and look for some veterans to add to the roster as insurance.

That is exactly the last move that Brad Spielberger of PFF believes the Eagles should make before training camp. His suggestion was to add another piece in their secondary, with safety Duron Harman as his predicted signing.

“Harmon has logged more than 1,000 snaps in three consecutive seasons and provides a reliable presence on the back end at free safety. Philadelphia’s current position group is largely made up of younger, inexperienced players.

Harmon earned a 77.6 coverage grade in 2022 with multiple interceptions for the sixth year in a row to go along with a career-high 67 tackles and 11 defensive stops. After a very strong draft that also addressed positional needs, there are effectively no holes on this Eagles roster. Depth at tight end or wide receiver were areas to consider here earlier in the offseason, but Philadelphia went ahead and added free agents Olamide Zaccheaus and Dan Arnold.”

Harmon was one of the only bright spots in the secondary for the Las Vegas Raiders last season and it is a little bit surprising that he remains available at this point. As pointed out by Spielberger, he has been a reliable, consistent producer for more than half a decade.

One of the bigger losses that the Eagles suffered this offseason was safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson joining the Detroit Lions. Terrell Edmunds and Justin Evans were signed in free agency to replace him, but neither of those players provides the steading presence that Harmon would.

Not everyone can handle the pressure of playing big games and contending for Super Bowls, but Harmon would be able to. He is a three-time Super Bowl champion from his days with the New England Patriots and the bright lights definitely wouldn’t phase him.
