Eagles Connected To Intriguing Free Agent Running Back

D'Onta Foreman, Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles fell just short of their goal of winning a Super Bowl. They lost a back-and-forth, hard-fought game to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 57, 38-35. Now, it is time for them to begin their offseason preparations so that they can reinforce the roster and try again next season.

Philadelphia has one of the best rosters in the NFL and general manager Howie Roseman has done a wonderful job in recent years rebuilding the team. They are in a great spot heading into the offseason as they are loaded up with draft capital and have some maneuverability under the salary cap as well.

Retaining some of their free agents will be task No. 1 in free agency. The Eagles have multiple key players from their lineup hitting the market this offseason, including nine starters and numerous backups. Retaining all of them will be virtually impossible, but the front office will do its best to keep the roster intact.

One position that could be overturned in the coming weeks is running back. Miles Sanders and Boston Scott both had their contracts expire, leaving Kenneth Gainwell as the only player under contract currently in 2023 at the position.

Sanders was excellent in 2022, rushing for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns while earning a Pro Bowl nod. Scott was an integral part of their running back rotation and it would not be surprising if he moved on to seek a larger role elsewhere.

Ahead of the trade deadline, the Eagles did check in on the availability of Alvin Kamara, so there was some interest in making an upgrade. That could lead to them looking to make changes this off-season.

If Sanders and Scott price themselves out of Philadelphia, one player to keep an eye on is D’Onta Foreman. Foreman had a wonderful season for the Carolina Panthers, assuming the lead role after Christian McCaffrey was traded to the San Francisco 49ers and making the most of his opportunity.

Foreman finished the season with 203 carries for 914 yards and five touchdowns. The Panthers had one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL despite McCaffrey being traded and Foreman was a big reason for that.

Likely available for a much cheaper price than Sanders, Foreman would be an ideal fit for the Eagles should they be forced to go in a different direction. What he lacks in pass catching he makes up for in strength and power, a throwback who will run over any opponent in front of him.

Gainwell showed that he can handle the passing role, making Foreman the ideal early down bruiser to pair him with. With other hotels to potentially fill on the roster, the Eagles can save some money at running back with Foreman, allocating the most funds to other areas, such as the secondary and pass rush.
