Eagles Could Pull Off Major Trade For Seahawks’ Russell Wilson?

The Philadelphia Eagles committed to Jalen Hurts as their starting quarterback in 2021 and the results were solid. They qualified for the postseason, earning one of the Wild Card spots in the NFC with a 9-8 record. However, his limitations were on full display against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Eagles finished the season as strongly as they did on the strength of their running game. They had the best rushing offense in the NFL and Hurts, who paced the team with 784 yards on the ground, was a big reason why. However, their passing game left a lot to be desired.

Hurts made some strides as a passer in 2021, but there is still plenty of work to do in that area of his game. Are the Eagles willing to wait another season to see if he can further develop, or will they look for an established veteran to help take the team to the next level?

If they look to make a change, Russell Wilson is one player to keep an eye on. Wilson was part of a Bleacher Report piece that paired quarterback backs to wide receivers to make elite combos, and in that scenario, he landed in Philadelphia to be paired with DeVonta Smith.

Despite Hurts’ up-and-down play as a passer, Smith put together the best rookie season in Eagles history for a wide receiver. He caught 64 passes for 916 yards and five touchdowns, making for a strong one-two punch with tight end Dallas Goedert.

If the Eagles were to land Wilson and upgrade the wide receiver depth chart behind Smith, this offense would be in business. While Wilson hasn’t requested a trade from the Seattle Seahawks, there are people close to him that believe he will explore other options to continue building his legacy and to win another championship.

Philadelphia wasn’t on the original list that Adam Schefter revealed last year. Last year’s list included the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders.

Wilson possesses a full no-trade clause, so he will have plenty of say in where he ends up if he wants to leave at all. But, in December, Schefter revealed during a radio appearance that he believes Wilson would be open to waiving that no-trade clause to land with the Eagles.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has not been shy expressing his disappointment about missing on Wilson in the 2012 NFL Draft. This could be his chance to right that wrong, but it would take some work on the salary cap to make it feasible.

Philadelphia would need to clear $20 million off the cap to take on Wilson’s contract. They would also need to build a package that would entice the Seahawks enough to make a deal. Bleacher Report provided a hypothetical trade of the Eagles sending two of their first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft (No. 16 and 19) along with Hurts to Seattle for Wilson.
