The Green Bay Packers 2022 season was effectively ended by the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football in Week 12. The Packers have a two percent chance of making the playoffs after the 40-33 loss as they fell to 4-8 on the season.
But, there was a glimpse of the future in the fourth quarter of the game. Aaron Rodgers, who has been dealing with a broken thumb that he suffered in Week 5 against the New York Giants, injured his ribs against the Eagles. He tried to tough things out, but he was eventually removed from the game.
That thrust Jordan Love into the lineup as he played the entire fourth quarter. He played well, completing 6-of-9 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was scored by Christian Watson, the Packers’ second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of North Dakota State.
Is that a combination we could see more of this season? Rodgers’ status is up in the air given the injuries that he is dealing with, which could lead to Love stepping into the starting lineup. While it was a small sample size, Love looked very confident leading the Packers’ offense against a very good Eagles defense. There were players on Philadelphia’s defense that were impressed as well.
During his podcast/YouTube show this week, Eagles cornerback Darius Slay spoke about the matchup against the Packers. He heaped a ton of praise on Love and was very complimentary of the third-year quarterback.
That is certainly a major statement being made by Slay, who has played against a ton of quarterbacks in his time in the NFL. To feel so confident about the skill set that Love showed against his team is certainly a ringing endorsement.
With Rodgers’ future up in the air, Love could finally have a chance to start next season for the Packers. If Rodgers decides that he wants to continue his playing career, teams could start making calls about Love’s availability, especially if he starts some games down the stretch and plays at a high level.
