Ezekiel Elliott Has Narrowed Down His Options In Free Agency

Running back Ezekiel Elliott found himself in a position he has never been in this offseason. After spending the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, he was designated as a post-June 1st cut, making him a free agent for the first time in his professional career.

Ezekiel Elliott had no guaranteed money remaining on his contract, so when the two sides couldn’t agree to a restructured deal, he was cut. While his cap numbers won’t come off the Cowboys’ books for a few more weeks, he is free to negotiate with other teams.

That is exactly what he has been doing, as he has a lot of suitors. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, he has narrowed those choices down to three and expects to sign by the end of the week. Where could we see Ezekiel Elliott playing in 2023? It will either be for the New York JetsPhiladelphia Eagles or Cincinnati Bengals.

Joining the Eagles would certainly be enticing because it would give him a shot to face off against his former team twice a season. They are also set up to be contenders in the NFC, but the backfield looks like it will be crowded in Philadelphia.

Miles Sanders departed in free agency, but they filled his spot on the roster. Kenneth Gainwell is a holdover from last season while Boston Scott re-signed and the team added Rashaad Penny from the Seattle Seahawks.

The Jets have upgraded their offense in a major way this offseason. They have already signed wide receivers Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman and are linked to Odell Bekcham Jr. as well. New York is anticipating adding Aaron Rodgers as their new starting quarterback.

Ezekiel Elliott would provide the Jets with some insurance in the backfield with Breece Hall working his way back from a torn ACL. While nowhere near as explosive as he once was, he can probably be more productive than what New York had last year in the backfield outside of Michael Carter.

In Cincinnati, Ezekiel Elliott would have a chance to step right into the role that Samaje Perine held behind Joe Mixon. Perine signed with the Denver Broncos in free agency, leaving Trayveon Williams and Chris Evans as the only backups behind Mixon.

Those two combined for six rushing attempts and five receptions in 2022, so adding an established veteran such as Ezekiel Elliott certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea. Mixon showed some wear-and-tear last season, so having a reliable option behind him is important for the Bengals.
