Atlanta Falcons: 3 Best Week 1 Performances vs. Eagles

No. 3: Linebacker Dion Jones

We’ve already touched on him a little bit, but Dion Jones deserves a shoutout of his own.

One of the best up-and-coming linebackers in the league, Jones had an excellent performance in front of a nationwide audience on Thursday night. He flew around the field all night, collecting nine tackles and picking off Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, the only turnover of the game.

Known as one of the better coverage linebackers in the league, it was the seventh interception of Jones’ career, impressive for a linebacker whose career has spanned just 32 games. While Eagles running back Jay Ajayi scored two touchdowns, Jones helped limit him to just 62 yards on 15 carries. Foles finished with just 117 yards passing, due in part to the coverage by the linebacking pair mentioned here.

Jones finished with 92 tackles last season and should break the 100-tackle milestone if he remains healthy. With his already steady pass coverage, he could make a leap into the next tier of NFL linebackers.

With one Pro Bowl already under his belt, there’s no reason to believe Jones won’t be adding another one at season’s end.
