Saquon Barkley and Sterling Shepard
The problem with owning Evan Engram in fantasy isn’t just Odell Beckham Jr. There are other players who can take away touches from Engram. With the second pick in the 2018 draft, the Giants selected Saquon Barkley, the running back from Penn State.
In drafting Barkley, the Giants decided to become a more balanced offense moving forward. Barkley has superstar potential and can create big plays anytime the ball is in his hands. So look for the Giants to get the ball in Barkley’s hands as much as possible.
Moreover, not only will Barkley take away touches away from Engram when the Giants run the ball, but Barkley also can take away touches in the passing game. Head coach Pat Shurmur will get Barkley involved in the passing game because he is a great option out the backfield. The mismatch of Barkley versus a linebacker or safety could, at times, be a bigger threat than Engram versus the same combo.
In addition, slot receiver Sterling Shepard will take away more possible receptions from Engram. Besides dominant No. 1 receivers, slot receivers often get the most receptions in the NFL. Furthermore, without Beckham for the majority of the season, Shepard led the Giants in receiving yards.
Engram’s opportunities will be limited with Shepard, Barkley and Beckham surrounding him.
