2. David Montgomery, Bears
There was a lot of buzz surrounding David Montgomery coming into his rookie season last year. He had a strong showing in preseason and his head coach Matt Nagy hyped the young back up as well. This made Montgomery fly up fantasy football draft boards and owners snagging him in the 3rd or 4th round (myself included) thought they were getting the next great rookie running back.
Well, it was definitely a lackluster season for anyone expecting a breakout fantasy performance for Montgomery. He only had two top-15 weeks and finished at RB25 in half-PPR leagues, not the mid-to-top tier RB2 he was drafted to be. This season however, Montgomery is the perfect “post-hype” sleeper target.
The work-load was there for Montgomery as a rookie and will be there this season as well. He had 242 carries which was 13th in the NFL. Montgomery was just very inefficient with those carries and totaled only 889 yards at a mere 3.7 YPC.
If Montgomery can improve his YPC only slightly and convert more of his goal-line carries, (had 14 carries within 5 yards to the end zone) we could be looking at a top-15 RB. Currently going at RB27 and with an ADP of 76.7, Montgomery could be a steal for those looking to wait for their RB2.
