Potential Prolific Passing (Game)
Ahh, alliteration, how I love thee. But this isn’t just an excuse to use one of my favorite literary tools. I truly believe the Miami Dolphins passing attack can be potent this season. I’ve gone on record several times as believing Jarvis Landry hand-cuffed this offense. It’s a hill I’m prepared to die on. Landry is now in Cleveland, and in his place are two playmakers. The offense has opened up immensely, in my opinion.
Danny Amendola has secretly been one of my favorite players in the league for years. Obviously I’ve kept my love largely under wraps with him in New England. Now that he’s a Dolphin, I can fully embrace my love for him. He’s had a tough time with injuries, but when Amendola is healthy, he adds much to an offense. And he’s just one of two free agent newcomers who helps the Dolphins offense spread the field, potentially limiting Drake’s touches.
Albert Wilson isn’t a big-name commodity, but for my money he’s one of the best free agent signings Miami has made in recent years. Far from the “splash” signings of the past, Wilson is a solid receiving option who always seemed to get the short end of the stick in Kansas City. Stuck behind the likes of Tyreke Hill, Travis Kelce, and the emergence of Kareem Hunt, Wilson was all but an afterthought in the Chiefs offense. An afterthought who still managed to bring in over 500 yards on 40+ receptions, with three touchdowns.
Wilson may be stuck behind another trio in Miami with Kenny Stills, Mike Gesicki, and Kenyan Drake, but I think he sees a bigger share of the offense than he did in Kansas City. He’s always been a solid option, and he’s someone I could see developing into the team’s No. 2 option before all is said and done.
All this is to say that, especially in a league where the passing game is becoming ever more prevalent, Drake’s opportunities in the running game could shrink as the year goes on. Adam Gase has gone on record as saying he wants to get Drake at least 15-20 touches a game, but if the passing game becomes as prolific as I believe it can, that may be a stretch.
