Fantasy Football: 3 Reasons for Caution on Kenyan Drake

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Commitment and Injuries

I’m combining these last two points because individually I think each one is making something out of nothing. Gameplans change from game-to-game and year-to-year. Drake has been nicked here and there in his pro career, but has yet to miss a game. On their own, neither one of this is something that I would think twice about. Definitely not enough that I would caution against drafting such a promising player.

But both of them together does give me pause. If you’ve watched the Dolphins over the years, one of the most consistently frustrating things has been our lack of commitment to the run. I can’t tell you how many games I’ve watched over the years that had me thinking the team was finally committing to the run, only to have my hopes summarily dashed as the game went on. Even when the run has been working, it seems inevitable that the team abandons it to air it out. With the weapons Miami has amassed, I’m sure the temptaiton will be there to continue that trend.

If Kenyan Drake played any other position, and this were any other person’s article, I’d say harping on his injury history is a cop-out. I won’t be offended if you feel the same. But we all know how quickly things can turn south for a running back.

Drake has been more or less the picture of health since coming into the league, but his college career was rife with injuries. Drake missed most of the 2014 season with a dislocated ankle. He also missed two games the following season with a broken arm. Since joining the Dolphins, Drake hasn’t missed any games, but did tweek a hamstring in training camp in 2016.

Add on two concussions, one in college and one in the 2017 training camp, and it’s enough to give me pause when combined with all the other factors. Kenyan Drake should have a solid season in 2018, but I have some serious doubts as to whether or not he’ll be the fantasy football stud he’s been touted as.
