Fantasy Football outlook for Patriots QB Cam Newton in 2020

Cam Newton spent way too much time in the free agent market following the 2019 season. It ended when the New England Patriots, desperate for help at quarterback, signed the former MVP to a one-year, $1.05 million contract. Newton will receive $550k in guaranteed money.

The immediate question entering everyone’s mind was what kind of quarterback will Newton be in New England? The Patriots were set to roll with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer in training camp. This was not good enough so they opted to add Newton at a bargain price. Newton has always been a quarterback that likes to use his legs and make plays running the football. He was never afraid to take a hit given his incredible size and strength.

This is something that could change in 2020. Newton has not been as durable as he once was early in his career. Over the last 20 years, Bill Belichick did not feature a running quarterback with Tom Brady under center. New England’s offense featured many short routes and check down passes. Can Newton be a productive quarterback from the pocket?

Newton will be one of the most interesting names to think about entering the fantasy football season. Once a top quarterback in the game, Newton has fallen quickly from grace. Is he still worthy of a QB1 position in fantasy or has he moved to the bench for 2020?
