James White
Average draft position in ESPN leagues: 102.4
Besides Edelman, the Patriots’ second-best option in the passing game in 2019 was James White. In the past five seasons, White has become a steady option out of the backfield for the Patriots. The former Wisconsin Badger is just one season removed from being the 11th highest-scoring running back in fantasy football.
White does most of his damage as a receiving threat, catching 159 passes in the past two seasons. With there being uncertainty surrounding the status of Sony Michel, White’s usage could increase in 2020. Also, despite Newton showing a tendency of pushing the ball down the field, White could still be a valuable target.
In recent seasons, Newton’s toned down on throwing it deep, averaging more than seven yards per attempt just once since 2016. The last full season that Newton played in (2017), he averaged 8.2 intended air yards per attempt — 20th among 41 qualified quarterbacks. While Josh McDaniels will entice Newton to uncork the ball downfield, White is going to see plenty of check downs from the three-time Pro Bowler.
