From 2006-2019, Philip Rivers started every game for the Chargers. But the franchise was ready to move on, and he signed with the Indianapolis Colts in free agency. The move puts the Colts in a win-now window.
In Indianapolis, Rivers will reunite with Frank Reich and Nick Sirianni. Reich was the Chargers’ quarterback coach in 2013, then he became offensive coordinator in 2014 and 2015. Sirianni was on the Chargers’ coaching staff from 2013-2017, moving from quality control coach to quarterbacks coach to wide receivers coach.
Looking at Rivers’ stat sheet, it can be argued that 2013-15 was the most productive three-year stretch of his career. And now he’s back with two prominent coaches from those years.
Rivers’ 14 seasons as the Chargers’s starter are divided easily from a fantasy angle.
In his first seven seasons as the starter (2006-2012), via Pro Football Reference, Rivers finished as QB8, QB16, QB3, QB7, QB4, QB9 and QB21. In the last seven (2013-2019), he finished QB6, QB12, QB11, QB14, QB8, QB11 and QB18.
Even allowing for any differences in scoring, that still breaks down as five top-10 fantasy finishes for Rivers in his first seven seasons. In his most recent seven, he has had two top-10 finishes. But it’s worth noting he was weekly starter-ilk (top-12) five times, with one finish outside the top-14 in the last seven seasons. To channel Yoda on the latter data point… last year, it was.
On a new team at age 38, where will Rivers sit among fantasy quarterbacks in 2020?
