Former Broncos LB Warns Team Against Drafting Quarterback

Even though head coach Sean Payton is trying to play coy, the Denver Broncos are almost certainly going to enter the 2024 campaign with a new quarterback.

Russell Wilson is on the outs in Denver, as he refused to defer his $37 million injury guarantee, resulting in him being benched for the final two games of the 2023 season.

The Broncos are expected to release Wilson in the coming weeks, which would free him to join a contender while Denver gets to push the reset button.

However, former Broncos linebacker Todd Davis does not think the team should draft a quarterback just yet. Why? Because he doesn’t feel Denver has enough supplementary pieces to make it worthwhile.

“You’ve got build a good team, and then when the time is right, you go get your quarterback,” Davis said on his DNVR Podcast. “I think we’re missing a lot of pieces that can make us a championship-caliber team along with the quarterback. So maybe you build that winning culture … and then eventually, once it’s time, and you know this is the guy, you trade up to go get him.”

While Davis’ statement is understandable, there is an issue with it, because that would also mean that bad teams who own the No. 1 overall pick should also not take a quarterback in the draft.

Obviously, the Broncos are in a bit of a different situation, as they went 8-9 this past season, but the quarterback position is the most important one on the roster. You would think Denver would prioritize fixing its problem under center above all else.

The Broncos own the 12th overall pick in the draft this coming April, and there has been some talk about them trying to trade up. Davis does not think Denver should do that and that the team should instead focus on plugging up its other holes first.

But sometimes, a good quarterback can mask those holes by himself.
