Former NFL QB Fires Back At One Area Of Caleb Williams Criticism

One of the recent criticisms of USC quarterback Caleb Williams as he prepares to become the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft later this month is that he has not faced adversity.

Former NFL signal-caller and current ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III has fired back against that narrative, saying that Williams has absolutely dealt with—and conquered—adversity already.

Griffin mentions Williams’ early collegiate days at the University of Oklahoma, when he was thrust into the starting role midway through the season and ended up having a terrific year.

He also cites Williams playing through a torn hamstring in USC’s Cotton Bowl loss to Tulane back in January 2023, which was his first season with the Trojans.

It should also be noted that Williams transferred from Oklahoma to USC and was able to handle the transition smoothly, which is also something that Williams can hang his hat on.

There are some who consider Williams to be a generational talent, but others have questions about his mental toughness and whether or not he can handle the rigors of professional football.

The 22-year-old is widely expected to be drafted by the Chicago Bears with the top overall selection in the draft and will step into a situation in which he can actually help lead the Bears to the playoffs right off the bat, so we will find out pretty quickly how well Williams handles adversity in the NFL.

Williams is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he threw for 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 68.6 percent of his passes. He also punched in 11 rushing scores.

In a draft class that features a bunch of incredibly talented quarterbacks, Williams is considered the best of the group. We will see if he lives up to those expectations starting next September.
