Transitioning to a new defensive strategy presents a fresh set of challenges, and for the Green Bay Packers, adopting a 4-3 defense under the guidance of new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley necessitates a robust linebacker corps.

While the majority of teams often deploy nickel formations, the Packers’ shift to a base 4-3 defense demands three proficient linebackers as starters. Presently, the roster boasts Quay Walker, De’Vondre Campbell, and Isaiah McDuffie, though Campbell’s future with the team remains uncertain given the possibility of being cut this offseason.

Identified as an area of priority in both free agency and the draft, Packers’ general manager Brian Gutekunst acknowledges the necessity to bolster the linebacker position, stating, “We’re going to have to add. There’s not a lot of personnel changes we’re going to have to make with the scheme change, but we’ll probably have to carry a couple more linebackers into training camp.”

Former Pro Bowl defensive lineman for the Packers, Mike Daniels, expresses enthusiasm regarding the defensive transition to a 4-3 scheme and its potential impact on Kenny Clark. Daniels advocates for the acquisition of free-agent linebacker Devin White, believing his addition alongside Campbell could significantly elevate the team’s defensive prowess. Daniels suggests, “If they bring Devin White in to play next to Campbell, you might as well start fitting Kenny Clark for his gold jacket.”

While Campbell’s future remains uncertain, the notion of bringing White on board aligns with Daniels’ sentiment. White could feasibly become a key component alongside Quay Walker in the starting linebacker trio, a move that would undoubtedly benefit Clark, a perennial Pro Bowler and one of the premier interior defensive linemen in the league.

Despite the potential upside of signing White, there exists an inherent risk. White’s recent loss of his starting role with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and his subpar performance in run defense raise concerns. Nonetheless, as a former high draft pick, Pro Bowler, and All-Pro selection, White possesses undeniable talent and has showcased his abilities against the Packers in previous encounters.

If the Green Bay Packers can harness White’s potential and mitigate the associated risks, his addition could prove to be a significant boon for the team. A change of scenery might be the catalyst for White to rediscover his Pro Bowl form, ultimately enhancing the performance of the entire defense, particularly elevating Clark’s impact on the field.
