As the Indianapolis Colts prepare for the upcoming NFL offseason, there is one big question on the minds of every fan. What is the future at quarterback and should the team move on from Carson Wentz? Quite honestly, the Colts could look to add another quarterback even if they keep Wentz, and a guy like Philadelphia Eagles backup Gardner Minshew could make a ton of sense.
Should the Colts choose to keep Wentz for one more season, they should bring in some competition for him. Lighting a fire under a talented, but struggling quarterback can be one way to maximize results. No, the Colts would not be trading for Minshew to start, but he could push Wentz to greater heights.
ESPN suggested that the Colts could be a potential trade partner for the Eagles regarding Minshew. His contract wouldn’t be much of a burden and he would provide excellent depth and pressure for Wentz.
Minshew has sneaky good value as a bridge starter. He has shown promise at two stops — Jacksonville and Philadelphia — and his $2.5 million salary is cost-effective. He wants to play. Who will give him a chance? Maybe the Colts add a passer to apply pressure to Wentz.
Minshew played sparingly during the 2021 NFL season with the Eagles. He did get some time when Jalen Hurts was out and he made the most of his opportunities.
When everything was said and done this year, Minshew completed 68.3 percent of his pass attempts for 439 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. He also picked up 21 yards on the ground. Those numbers aren’t bad at all for a guy who didn’t see the field much.
At 26 years old, Minshew still has a long career left ahead of him. Heading to a team like the Colts where he could compete with Wentz would bring out the competitiveness in Gardner Minshew as well. This seems like a win-win for all parties involved.
Expect to hear a ton of rumors surrounding the Colts this offseason. Chris Ballard has his work cut out for him. If he wants to add a quarterback to apply pressure on Wentz, he should look no further than Minshew.
