Gardner Minshew Suggested As Trade Target For The Steelers

The 2021 NFL season has been an emotional and crazy ride for the Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. With this year likely being his last, Big Ben has led the franchise to the playoffs one more time. Heading into the offseason, the Steelers will be looking at quarterback options, and Philadelphia Eagles backup Gardner Minshew has been suggested as a potential trade target.

Minshew would certainly be an intriguing pickup for the Steelers. He is a fan favorite due to his wild personality and has played very well at times throughout his NFL career. There are far worse players that Pittsburgh could bring in.

One suggested trade would send Minshew to Pittsburgh in exchange for a 2023 fourth-round pick. The Eagles likely would be willing to make that move for their backup quarterback due to the strong play of starting quarterback Jalen Hurts. If that deal was made, Minshew would have an opportunity to compete for the starting job with the Steelers.

During the 2021 season with the Eagles, Minshew played very sparingly. He ended up completing 68.3 percent of his pass attempts for 439 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Those numbers aren’t too bad and it certainly shows that Minshew has a capable NFL arm.

As of right now, the Steelers are left with three quarterbacks on their current roster outside of Roethlisberger. Those three quarterbacks are Mason Rudolph, Dwayne Haskins, and Joshua Dobbs. Out of those three, Haskins seems to be the only candidate that could have a shot at becoming the new starter in Pittsburgh, although that isn’t an ideal option.

Bringing in a guy like Gardner Minshew would make perfect sense. He could start if he wins the job or be a quality backup should the Steelers give a guy like Haskins a shot. Or, the Steelers could very well look like make a much bigger move.

All of that being said, it’s going to be a very interesting offseason for the Steelers. They still are focused on making a Super Bowl run with Roethlisberger, but the quarterback position will need to be addressed. Minshew may not be the ideal candidate for starting quarterback, but he certainly isn’t an awful one either.
