No. 1: Protect Eli Manning
The one glaring problem with the Giants is their offensive line issues. Through two weeks, quarterback Eli Manning has been sacked eight times. Six of those came just last week, against the Dallas Cowboys.
This is an issue that needs to be fixed immediately. Guys are missing assignments and are making mental mistakes on the offensive line. Messing up protections and missing blocks can ruin an offense’s ability to move the ball downfield.
The inability to block has caused this offense to struggle miserably.
I know people want to point fingers at right tackle Ereck Flowers, but no one on this line is performing at the level they should be. It’s understood that Flowers struggles in pass protection, hence why he is at right tackle now, not left tackle.
The Giants newly acquired Nate Solder, has been disappointing so far after signing a four-year, $62 million deal in the offseason. When you’re paid that type of money, especially on the offensive line, you’re expected to produce immediately. That hasn’t been the case.
The offensive line needs to work on their communication and pass protection going forward. The Giants will need the offensive line to improve drastically this week, against All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt and the Texans. This offensive line can’t catch a break against elite pass-rushers, first the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Calais Campbell, then the Cowboys’ Demarcus Lawrence.
If the O-line can keep Manning off his back, we could see a couple more big plays from this offense, thus putting up more points.
