Giants QB Tommy DeVito Doesn’t Hold Back On Future

One of the best stories of the 2023 NFL season came from the New York Giants‘ undrafted rookie quarterback, Tommy DeVito. He began the season buried on the depth chart behind Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor but ended up making several starts during the season.

When Jones and Taylor both suffered injuries, it was DeVito’s number that was called. He found a lot more success than anyone could have imagined, helping lead the Giants to three victories over the Washington Commanders, Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots.

However, it was evident that there were clear limitations when DeVito was on the field. He struggled against some of the more aggressive defenses, such as the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles, resulting in some ugly performances.

DeVito was removed from the lineup for the second half of the Giants’ Christmas Day game against the Eagles and Taylor took over from that point on. While it wasn’t the ending DeVito was hoping for, he did put some good performance on tape to use when looking for jobs around the NFL.

What could the future hold for him? In an exclusive interview with Heavy, DeVito spoke about what his role with the Giants could be moving forward. While no discussions have been held yet, he is preparing for anything that is thrown his way.

“Honestly, I haven’t had any conversations [with the Giants on his role],” DeVito explained during a January 16, 2024 interview. “I’m just going to continue to do what I did getting to this point. Keep my head down and work. Obviously, all the external noise is there now, so continue to filter that out.

“A couple months ago when I was on practice squad, I think I was kind of in a similar situation. I don’t know what’s going to happen, right?” DeVito continued. “I have two guys ahead of me. D.J. [Daniel Jones] just got a brand new contract. Tyrod’s [Taylor] been in the league for 13, 14 years. I see the writing on the wall. ‘Practice squad is going to be my deal this year.’ And obviously, it’s a physical game, things happen, injuries happen. I was kind of thrust into a different situation.”

DeVito is under contract with the Giants through 2024, but the quarterback room is expected to have some changes. Taylor is a free agent and speculation has swirled that New York could look to add a quarterback with their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Tommy DeVito & New York Giants Updates

General manager Joe Schoen has also made it clear when Jones is healthy, he will be the starter once again. That leaves DeVito in limbo, as his role moving forward with the Giants is undefined. Could he challenge for the starting spot if Jones isn’t ready to play? Or will he be relegated to emergency quarterback duty?

At the very least, DeVito should be given a shot to compete for the backup job. While he showed some limitations during his time as the starter, the team didn’t completely fall apart as he kept things afloat in what was a lost season.
