The standoff between the New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley has come to an end quicker than anyone anticipated. Despite some hard feelings developing last week, the two sides were able to get back to the negotiating table and hammer out a deal for the 2023 season.

Saquon Barkley agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $11 million. He received a $2 million signing bonus and has $10.1 million guaranteed. That is the same amount of money he would have earned on the franchise tag, but his new deal includes $1 million in incentives for reaching 1,300 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns and 65 receptions.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on the new contract details, while another source added that the deal does not include a “no franchise tag” clause. So, Saquon Barkley could be back in the same spot next year depending on how things shake out.

This one-year deal came about because the two sides were unable to work out a contract extension ahead of the July 17th deadline. 4 p.m. that day was the last chance that Saquon Barkley and the Giants had to work out a long-term deal. A one-year deal was all that could be worked out until after the 2023 season.

Veterans are reporting for camp with the Giants on Tuesday and according to Jordan Ranaan of ESPN, Saquon Barkley is already there. While things got a bit unnerving last week, he won’t end up missing any time in training camp.

This is excellent news for the Giants as their offense is built around Saquon Barkley. He is the most important player on the team, as his presence makes life a whole lot easier for quarterback Daniel Jones, whose production plummets without his star running back on the field.

With the contract situation now behind them, the Giants can turn all of their focus onto the field for the 2023 season. Having Saquon Barkley in the mix was the last task they had to complete and they were able to get it done before the first official day of camp.
