New York Giants: Top 5 Takeaways from Week 1 Loss vs. Jaguars

No. 5: Ereck Flowers Struggles Yet Again

Right tackle Ereck Flowers struggled all game in pass protection. This has always been a weakness for Flowers since being drafted at the ninth overall pick in 2015. The Giants were hoping moving him from left tackle to the right would allow them to avoid Flowers’ weakness.

It didn’t in this game.

The Jaguars took advantage of Flowers from the first snap of the game. The Jaguars stuck defensive tackle Calais Campbell right across Flowers on the right side for the first play for the Giants offense. Flowers was beat off the snap (like usual) and was called for a tripping penalty.

Here’s the penalty for your viewing pleasure:

It didn’t get much better as Flowers was constantly being pushed back into Manning’s face all throughout the game, creating an uncomfortable pocket for the Giants QB. Flowers would allow one sack and was called on quite a few penalties. These are things that have troubled him in his short career so far.

The Giants will need Flowers to improve next week and going forward if they want to protect Manning. Flowers will have a chance to do so next week against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. His play will be on display to everyone on live TV. It also doesn’t get much easier for Flowers, having to face Demarcus Lawrence next week.
