Giants: What should we expect out of Daniel Jones in 2020?

While the New York Giants are still in the midst of a rebuild, the speed of that rebuilding process hinges on the success of their second year quarterback, Daniel Jones.

After a promising rookie season in which Jones tossed 24 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions while completing over 60 percent of his passes, there’s reason for optimism in the Big Apple. If Jones takes that next step in his development, the Giants could surprise a lot of people this season.

A lot of this teams’ success will ride on first year head coach Joe Judge as well, and he’s voiced his confidence in Jones to lead New York’s offense. On an appearance on NBCSN, Judge stated, “Daniel’s got to take on a role just by the nature of the position. He’s done a phenomenal job setting the tone with the way he’s working right now.”

While Jones may be looked at as the clear cut leader of the team already, he won’t be without help on the field. General manager Dave Gettleman got him some serious help for his offensive line, signing former Dallas Cowboys tackle Cameron Fleming and drafting tackle Andrew Thomas out of Georgia.

The Giants offense will be returning some solid weaponry for the quarterback as well. Running back Saquon Barkley is a legitimate super star out of the backfield. He’ll undoubtedly be someone Jones can lean on in the running game. Gettleman also added Dion Lewis to the mix, giving Jones a solid receiving threat out of the backfield.

Tight end Evan Engram is back. Health has been an issue for Engram, missing 13 games over the past two seasons, but if he can stay healthy he’s shown the potential to be a great tight end.

Second year wideout Darius Slayton should be a solid deep threat for Jones yet again in 2020, and both Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard are returning as well, giving Jones a nice trio of receivers.

The weapons are there, it’ll just come down to whether Jones can take that leap in development this offseason. Having a veteran backup in Colt McCoy as well as a seasoned offensive coordinator in Jason Garrett will surely help Jones reach his full potential.

Garrett has a history of developing young quarterbacks, most recently Dak Prescott in Dallas. Garrett’s offense has been criticized for being too predictable and sometimes too reliant on the running game, but his offense has always catered well to quarterbacks, especially young ones still trying to get their bearings down.

If all the pieces fall into place, this Giants team, lead by Jones, will be a formidable team in 2020.
