Packers Need to Address Their Safety Problem
It was clear that it was going to be a rough day for the back-end of the Packers secondary from the get-go. On the heels of a disappointing tie with the Minnesota Vikings where the safety play was questionable at best, the start of this game wasn’t much better.
On the first drive of the game for Washington, quarterback Alex Smith directly targeted and attacked safety Kentrell Brice. Brice floundered. He was unable to target the ball on a 46-yard bomb to Washington wide receiver Paul Richardson and just like that, Green Bay was trailing.
This is becoming a recurring theme for this Green Bay defensive unit. At it’s best, the safety play has been average. They will need to address this problem before it continues to fester and create ever more problems. Veteran safety Eric Reid is still available and there also just happens to be a disgruntled All-Pro rumored to be available. I believe they should, but could Green Bay make a play for Earl Thomas to fix their safety woes? The acquisition of Thomas could be the difference between another disappointing season and a Super Bowl championship in Green Bay.
