If Bill Belichick can’t land a head-coaching job, could he actually take a job with the Green Bay Packers in a different capacity?
It’s looking more and more likely that Belichick will not be coaching anywhere in 2024. Well, as a head coach, anyway.
The Atlanta Falcons have been the only team that has truly expressed interest in Belichick, bringing him in for a pair of interviews. However, the Falcons ultimately settled on Raheem Morris for the job.
There are only two vacant head-coaching positions remaining: the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders. Belichick does not seem to be a candidate for either opening.
The idea of the NFL passing over Belichick seems unheard of, but, nevertheless, here we are.
To combat the lack of interest in Belichick, Kyle Malzhan of WFRV Local 5 in Green Bay has pitched the idea of the Packers bringing in the legendary coach as their defensive coordinator.
It might be fun to think about, but realistically, it’s pretty ridiculous.
Yes, Belichick was a defensive coordinator at one point, but he last served in that capacity two-and-a-half decades ago when he was still with the New York Jets.
Belichick has been a head coach ever since 2000, so it’s hard to imagine him taking a step back and accepting a coordinator job.
Let’s also remember that while Belichick coached the New England Patriots from 2000 through 2023, he also served as the team’s general manager.
Can you envision Belichick going from head coach and general manager to just a defensive coordinator? Yeah, it’s not happening.
The idea of Belichick serving under Matt LaFleur is just crazy, and the fact that the proposal was even floated is just silly.
In 24 years with the Patriots, Belichick went 333-178 (including playoffs) while leading the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships, nine Super Bowl appearances and 17 AFC East division titles.
With that resume, Bill Belichick won’t be taking any assistant jobs.
