The Green Bay Packers made one of the biggest surprise splashes in free agency this offseason, signing running back Josh Jacobs to a multi-year deal.

The Packers weren’t expected to heavily pursue a top-tier halfback on the open market, but they jumped at the chance to add Jacobs.

The signing of Jacobs resulted in the release of long-time Green Bay running back Aaron Jones, but Jacobs is almost certainly an upgrade at this point.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has high hopes for the former Las Vegas Raiders star heading into 2024.

Jacobs will be the clear No. 1 option in a Green Bay backfield that also includes AJ Dillon and incoming rookie MarShawn Lloyd.

Can Josh Jacobs Rediscover His 2022 Form?

Jacobs is coming off of a rather poor 2023 campaign in which he rushed for 805 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 3.5 yards per carry. In his defense, he battled injuries and missed four games as a result, but regardless, those are some pretty poor numbers.

It’s important to note, however, that the 26-year-old is just two seasons removed from leading the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards to go along with 12 touchdowns. He averaged a robust 4.9 yards per attempt that year, also hauling in 53 receptions for 400 yards.

Jacobs, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Raiders with the 24th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

He enjoyed an impressive rookie season, racking up 1,150 yards and seven scores on the ground while logging 4.8 yards per tote. He rattled off 1,065 yards and 12 touchdowns the following year, although he was much less efficient, recording 3.9 yards per carry. He still made the Pro Bowl, however.

Jacobs then posted just 872 yards and nine scores while tallying four yards per attempt in 2021 before his monster 2023 season that resulted in a second trip to the Pro Bowl and a First-Team All-Pro selection.

Obviously, the Tulsa, Ok. native hasn’t exactly been the most consistent playmaker over his first five NFL seasons, but the Packers are obviously hoping the 2022 version of Jacobs returns this coming season.

We’ll see how LaFleur incorporates Josh Jacobs into what is actually a pretty pass-heavy offense in Green Bay.
