Green Bay Packers could look into signing Todd Gurley

The Green Bay Packers are entering what could be a very crazy and costly offseason, especially at the running back position. Both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are free agents and could sign elsewhere. If that does happen, a name to keep an eye on as a potential replacement could be Todd Gurley.

Granted, this isn’t the Gurley of the past. He would not be signing with the Packers to be the workhorse running back. In fact, he might not even start with second-year back AJ Dillon ready to take over a bigger role.

However, if the Packers need a serviceable running back to form a duo with Dillon in the backfield, Gurley could be their man.

One NFL scout, who requested to remain anonymous, spoke about the Packers’ potential interest in signing Gurley.

“Green Bay is a team to watch for (Todd) Gurley. He won’t have a huge market, but he isn’t going to be too expensive. The Packers have always loved Gurley’s game and could take him on a bargain one-year deal to platoon with AJ Dillon in the backfield.”

Last season with the Atlanta Falcons, Gurley showed some positive signs and some negative. He ended up carrying the football 195 times for 678 yards and nine touchdowns. Gurley also caught 25 passes for 164 yards, but did not score a touchdown through the air.

Matt LaFleur’s offense needs two capable running backs at all times. That was apparent with Jones and Williams over the last couple of years. He used both of them and kept them fresh by doing so.

If Gurley wants to join a contender and play a role, the Packers could be his best landing spot. Even if he did play as the No. 2 back behind Dillon, he would still get quite a few touches. Gurley doesn’t need to be worn down anymore as the No. 1 running back.

Another name that has come up is Patriots’ free agent running back James White. He would fit in as a lethal receiving back alongside Aaron Rodgers.

Expect to hear quite a few rumors and reports surrounding the Packers and their running back situation. With free agency close to getting underway, keep an eye out for Todd Gurley if both Jones and Williams leave town.
