The Green Bay Packers are going to be an intriguing team to keep an eye on heading into the NFL trade deadline. With a 4-0 record entering their bye week, Brian Gutekunst should go all-in on competing for a Super Bowl. Could Brandin Cooks be a potential target for the Packers?
Bleacher Report certainly thinks the Packers could pursue Cooks. Here is the brief explanation they gave for why Green Bay should consider the move.
In Green Bay, however, Cooks could help take the top off opposing defenses even as a decoy. This would help open up the running game and underneath routes for targets like emerging tight end Robert Tonyan. He could also create the occasional big play by burning secondaries that overcommit to covering Adams.
Cooks would be an ideal fit for what the Packers need. They don’t have a ton of speed at the wide receiver position. Davante Adams is a superstar, but he is more of a possession wideout, while Allen Lazard isn’t a burner either.
So far this season with the Houston Texans, Cooks has caught 10 passes for 138 yards and no touchdowns. He has yet to be given a consistent role. That makes it even more likely that the Texans could be open to trading him.
At 27 years old, Cooks would be a long-term option for the Packers. He has a potential out in his contract after this season, but has three more years left on his current deal at $12 million each season.
There is no question that the Packers are Super Bowl contenders this season. Adding a major threat like Cooks would make a lot of sense. He wouldn’t cost Green Bay more than a third-round pick, which is more than worth it to make a bigger push at a championship.
Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding the Packers in the coming days. Brandin Cook may not end up being a target, but he would certainly make sense.
