The Green Bay Packers are anticipated to embark on a search for a replacement for running back AJ Dillon in the upcoming 2024 offseason.
Dillon, a former second-round pick, is poised to become an NFL free agent in March. If the Packers are inclined to find a complementary power-rushing partner to team up with their star, Aaron Jones, they might discover the perfect fit in free agent Derrick Henry.
Derrick Henry recently concluded his four-year, $50 million contract with the Tennessee Titans in 2024. He maintained his impressive streak of double-digit rushing touchdowns for the sixth consecutive season. However, despite his superstar status, the 30-year-old running back is not expected to command the same exorbitant price on the 2024 NFL free agency market.
David Kenyon of Bleacher Report also speculates that Henry, a two-time All-Pro and former NFL rushing leader, could prioritize chasing a Super Bowl title over securing the most lucrative contract in 2024 NFL free agency. If this holds true, Kenyon suggests that the Green Bay Packers could emerge as one of the prime destinations for Derrick Henry, often referred to as ‘King Henry.’
“Dallas may fall in love with Henry’s name value and hope a solid offensive line boosts the 30-year-old close to exiting his prime. Green Bay fits a similar mold, especially if Aaron Jones takes another pay cut.”
Before pursuing Henry, the Packers must first reach a new agreement with Aaron Jones. Jones is entering the final year of his contract and carries a significant cap charge of approximately $17 million in 2024. Once they secure Jones’s future with the team, Green Bay may feel compelled to allocate resources and bring in a high-caliber running mate to bolster their backfield for the upcoming season.
Making a move for Henry would be a very interesting move for the Packers. They have other needs that need to be filled as well, but a backfield of Jones and Henry would take a ton of pressure off of Jordan Love.
All of that being said, Brian Gutekunst and the front office have quite a few decisions to make. Pursuing Henry seems unlikely, but the fit would make a ton of sense for both parties.
