Green Bay Packers: 5 Reasons the Packers Can Win Super Bowl LIII

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

No more Dom Capers

If Dom Capers wasn’t let go at the end of last season, I truly think Packers fans would have lost their minds. Rightfully so. Capers defense was truly uninspiring both on the field and on the stat sheet.

Statistically speaking, Green Bay’s defense allowed 348.9 yards per game and 24 points per game. These numbers place Green Bay at 22nd and 26th in the NFL.

A new defensive coordinator should be able to turn that around. Known as one of the bright defensive minds, Mike Pettine has experienced a great deal of success at the coordinator level. Furthermore, as a former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Pettine managed to take a rag-tag bunch of guys to seven wins.

Although seven wins doesn’t keep your job in Green Bay, that’s the third best record in the 20 years since the Browns were brought back to Cleveland. The last time Cleveland won more than seven games was in 2007. Unfortunately, Cleveland was impatient and let go of Pettine after the Browns regressed in year two under him.

In Pettine’s five seasons as a defensive coordinator with the Jets and Bills, his defenses never finished worse than 10th in yards allowed. Regarding takeaways, Pettine’s defenses finished in the top-10 in fumble recoveries four times and interceptions twice. The Green Bay Packers would love to see Mike Pettine replicate this success. If he can, the Packers will be firmly considered a Super Bowl contending team.
