The Green Bay Packers are facing an interesting situation this summer with their crowded and talented running back room, which may lead to a surprising trade before the season starts.

As the Packers head into training camp, they have three standout running backs vying for playing time: Josh Jacobs, A.J. Dillon, and rookie MarShawn Lloyd.

A.J. Dillon: Drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, the 26-year-old bruiser has been a reliable presence in Green Bay’s backfield. However, his production has declined each season, raising questions about his future with the team.

Josh Jacobs: The Packers made a significant move by acquiring Jacobs, a two-time Pro Bowler, with a lucrative four-year, $48 million contract. Jacobs is expected to be the primary ball carrier, shouldering the majority of the workload and taking pressure off quarterback Jordan Love.

MarShawn Lloyd: Drafted out of USC with the 88th pick in the 2024 draft, Lloyd brings fresh talent and huge potential to the team. Though he enters training camp as the third running back on the depth chart, his performance could quickly elevate his status.

Reports indicate that Dillon might be the odd man out due to Lloyd’s promising talent and Dillon’s diminishing performance.

ClutchPoints’ Liam Hanley recently highlighted Dillon as one of three Packers most likely to be traded this offseason, noting Lloyd’s emergence as a key factor.

Dillon’s decreased production last season, coupled with the Packers’ moves to sign Jacobs and draft Lloyd, suggest that the team is preparing for his potential departure.

His yards per carry have dropped each year, making him a less attractive option in Green Bay’s backfield. Moreover, his manageable cap hit of $1.29 million in 2024 makes him a convenient trade asset.

With the Green Bay Packers seemingly poised for a Dillon trade. The upcoming weeks in training camp will be important in determining the fate of Green Bay’s running back corps and whether Dillon will find a new home before the season begins.
